  1. ali mansur from Etobicoke, Canada writes: What's surprising about the current state of affairs is that GM is trading at a $6B market capitalization. That happens to be one third of their last quarter's loss.

Now, I don't expect GM will be bankrupt in 36 days, but it reminds of people who were buying the old Air Canada when it was known the stock was going to be worthless.
  2. Alistair McLaughlin from Canada writes: Ali, they do it every time. Remember all the folks buying Eatons stock after their "reorganization". Eatons was such an obvious dead man walking it wasn't even funny. Yet the masses scooped up their stock - it was so "cheap" after all.
  3. maurizio arani from Canada writes: BS....how can GM lose 15 BILLION yet they report strong numbers in Canada........Somethings not right

I know so many people buying Toyota, and Honda's not GM cars

I juts bought a new Toyota Carola......I had an old pontiac sunfire worst car EVER.......

Toyota is the way to go
  4. D P from Oakville, Canada writes: Time to buy a used domestic, the deals out there are incredible.
  5. PETER T from Toronto, Canada writes: It was just a pumped up (mainly on cheap leasing and financing rates for the previous months) before it drops to negative territory next month and so on ...
  6. Is there anybody out there? from Canary Islands, Canada writes: No good news here. Crash and burn credit freaks on the loose
  7. Neil Garret from Canada writes: Maurizio - because Canada is a piddly little market. All of Canada's Auto market is smaller than California's. You could do great in Canada - it it won't move the world wide needle.
  8. Right Said Fred from Canada writes: So if GDP contracted but car sales defied gravity, then we must not be in a recession!
  9. Robert MacDonald from Canada writes: Canada's doing great economically, except the money and wealth being generated within Canada, is being shipped down south.
  10. bill johnson from Quebec, Canada writes: This is easy to understand. Canadians like paying 30% more on the cars they purchase, thus the companies are only too happy to rip us off. I just bought an '08 car in the USA that retails for 60K in Canada for 36,250 in the USA (plus 6.1% duty). Savings after duty = more than 20K.
  11. Jules Mounteer from Canada writes: The fact of the matter is that Canadians are cheap. That GM is "still the dominant seller in Canada by a wide margin," reinforces this. You only buy GM for the deal as there is no other reason. Detroit is desperate and literally giving their products away. Of course sales will be up in Canada as long as the Detroit 2.8 are in dire straits.

Toyota, Honda and Nissan (somewhat) being up is no surprise. Subaru's increase is shocking due to their price gouging of the Canadian consumer.

No mention of Hyundai/Kia in this article. They have been increasing sales faster than anybody in other world markets.

Plus, how about some balance. No one, anywhere, would refer to the Pontiac G6 as "fuel-efficient".
  12. puddin and pie from Canada writes: Jules Mounteer from Canada writes:No one, anywhere, would refer to the Pontiac G6 as "fuel-efficient".
    ==================
    Pontiac G6 V6= 11.6 L/100 km
    Honda Accord V6 = city 11.0, hwy. 6.7
  13. Carl Hansen from Canada writes: You should buy all of GM because if they have a market cap of 6 billion they also have 19 billion in cash. You just have to figure out how to shut GM down and where to run with the 13 billion in cash.
The trouble is GM cannot just stop making cars.
  14. Robert MacDonald from Canada writes: GM builds a $7000 car, and sells it for $14000.
Toyota builds a $12000 car, and sells it for $15000.
  15. K D from Canada writes: "GM builds a $7000 car, and sells it for $14000.
Toyota builds a $12000 car, and sells it for $15000".

You have no idea. Go take a look a 2008 Malibu, beautiful car vs. the dull Camcords. The new 09 Aveo is much nicer than a Yaris. Even the 3 year old Cobalt is decent and a bargain compared to a Corolla. The new XFE 5-speed gets better mileage than Corolla or Civic also.

My sister just bought a Saturn Astra and traded he crappy Hyundia in for it. She is very happy.

People who dis GM have never been in one and believe what was in 1995 is still today. Luckily lots of Canadians know better.
  16. Robert MacDonald from Canada writes: I'm not going to argue facts and figures, to each there own.
Anyways, maybe GM should bring back the Chevette and the Firefly. Go back to 3 cyclinders and aim for the $6000-$10000 market
  17. K D from Canada writes:
    RE : Pontiac G6

    4 cyl models

    9.6L/100km city, 6.4L/100km highway

    Accord

    9.4L/100km city , 6.4L / 100km highway.

    Pretty much the same.
  18. K D from Canada writes: "I'm not going to argue facts and figures, to each there own".

Yes because reality and figures are easier to prove than bias, perception and prejudice
  19. Robert MacDonald from Canada writes: With enough charts, specs, figures, facts, statistics and whatever else I wanna make up, I can prove just about anything... the world is flat!
  20. Robert MacDonald from Canada writes: I suppose if I wasted $15000 on a GM car I would probably be biased towards them too.. that's alot of money to justify wasting!
  21. Dr Demento from Canada writes: K D from Canada writes: "People who dis GM have never been in one and believe what was in 1995 is still today."

Nonsense - my last 2 cars were GM and it would take a miracle for me to purchase another. Many of their engines still use pushrods . . .
  22. Alistair McLaughlin from Canada writes: Robert MacDonald, how are we shipping wealth down south?
  23. A Canadian from Cole Harbour, Canada writes: K D from Canada

Totally agree with you , GM makes some of the best and nicest looking cars out there. The Chevrolet Malibu is a prime example.

Given a choice between a Toyota Matrix and a Pontiac Vibe, most people on this board would pick the Toyota just because it is a Toyota. It is all about perception.
  24. J F from Canada writes: It is incredible , how we in Canada ,want to trash General Motors, who have been for 80 years one of the largest manufacturing companies in this country, paid great wages to workers, and created jobs for all companies supplying them.
They have made mistakes, and the mistakes are quite severe.
To support Volkswagen, Mercedes, Audi, Nissan, BMW, Kia, Hyundai, Mazda ,and Honda and Toyota to a lesser extent,
who have never invested one penny in this country , except to destroy manufacturing here is mindboggling.
As far as I am concerned , most people posting comments are selfish jerks
  25. Ghetto Dude from Istanbul, Turkey writes: "incentives of up to $120,000 (Canadian) for workers" Getting rid of one serf has never been so difficult in the history.
  26. Robert MacDonald from Canada writes: Just a FYI for A Canadian from Cole Harbour - the Pontiac Vibe chasis is actually manufactured by Toyota, its based off the Corolla
  27. On Edge from Canada writes: LOL!: "The new 09 Aveo is much nicer than a Yaris. "
  28. K D from Canada writes: " I suppose if I wasted $15000 on a GM car I would probably be biased towards them too.. that's alot of money to justify wasting!"

    Great arguments, wow.
  29. K D from Canada writes: Vibe is actually made by GM and Toyota at a joint plant. Interior of both Vibe and Matrix is GM designed, the power train is Toyota.

My buddy bought the Vibe as it was a much better deal for the same car.
  30. Dr Demento from Canada writes: On Edge from Canada writes: LOL!: "The new 09 Aveo is much nicer than a Yaris. "

I laughed at that too. The Aveo is rated dead last in its class in ALL reviews . . .
  31. Robert MacDonald from Canada writes: I'll give GM the interior design ability. They just need someone else to make their engines, chassis, and anything complex.
  32. K D from Canada writes: "I'll give GM the interior design ability. They just need someone else to make their engines, chassis, and anything complex".

Again you clearly you have no idea.

GM is typically criticized for cheap interiors and have only recently been addressing that. BMW buys GM transmissions for their cars and GM is well known to have among the best auto transmissions in the business. Even my Honda friends know that. GM has also won countless engine awards. Their Ecotec 4 cyl engines have a land speed records from the salt flats.

  33. Get 2 Work from Canada writes: Unfortunately Canadian sales are insignifant in the big picture.

It is the American market that decides the health of the auto industry. Even Toyota is laying off people. Ssshhhh. keep it hush....

  34. bill johnson from Quebec, Canada writes: JF...ever hear of Alliston? Are you aware Honda and Toyota are what is saving manufacturing in Ontario right now? Despite this, don't buy Honda - they are ripping Canadians off by pricing their vehicles - many made in Ontario - 30% higher tyhan in the USA.
  35. Get 2 Work from Canada writes: bill johnson from Quebec,

Sorry, but I think if it weren't for Honda and Toyota, manufacturing in Ontario would be booming.

The imports have stolen so much market share from the Detroit automakers, who traditionally provided the most jobs per auto sold.
