Don George from Canada writes: The response from TradeFreedom on how they're treating affected clients, has been miserably and frustratingly weak. I'm sure there's an army of lawyers now hired by TradeFreedom, coming up with oodles of strategies to defend the eventual negligence class action that possibly will come forward. My query at the Privacy Commissioner's Office in Ottawa has been an eye opener as well, if what I was told, was accurate by the front line person I spoke to. This office has lots of power to investigate, and make subsequent recommendations on future preventative remedies, but they have no teeth and no stick with which to enforce or effect consequences for non compliance. If this is true, then why are we paying tax dollars for this office to even exist ?? It's a shame that our written/statute laws on privacy protection, and what various organizations' duty of care should be....think "strict liability" for the big outfits with huge deep financial pockets, appear to be quite weak and limp. My emails to my own local MP and to the Attorney General in the Harper government have also gone unanswered. All of us deal with multiple organizations who either, at a minimum store personal client information on their servers, and/or use the internet to interact with prospects and existing clients to one degree or another. All of us have a stake in this.
